Human memory can be divided into three main categories:
Sensory Memory - Type 1:
This class of memory refers to experiences that we store and retain from our senses. These types of memories are temporary, lasting anywhere from one second to one week after the initial experience. Examples of sensory memories include recognizing an old friend or recalling the sound of your favorite song.
Memory Types 2 and 3 help us retain information for longer periods of time and retrieve it when we need it.
Working Memory: Memory Type 2
is a short-term memory that helps us retain and manipulate information for a brief period of time. Working memory allows us to remember a phone number long enough to look up the number or perform calculations with it. It can also help us hold the information for longer periods in order to study it, rehearse for an event, or perform mental tasks. The holds our working memory are called "schemas". Schemas are patterns of neural connections formed by experience about how the world is organized based on past and current knowledge.
If you have ever driven somewhere familiar and lost, you know what its like when your working memory gives out, leaving you confused about where to go next.
Preservation of long-term memories is dependent on making new synaptic connections between neurons in a process called long-term potentiation (LTP). These new synaptic connections are responsible for the formation of memory.
Episodic memory, memory type 3
is the part of our long term memory that encodes and stores information about events and experiences in a coherent sequence. It is important to remember that an event (such as the Christmas party you attended last December) consists of a series of stimuli linked together in a specific order.
Semantic storage makes up this category of memory, and it uses symbolic language to provide meaning to what we experience. This can include names of people, places, and things, such as your favorite car or the name of your brother's best friend in high school. Each piece of information is linked to another piece by some form of symbolism.
